Cardiologist Follow Up Appointment

Well, today makes 4 weeks from the day Ethan had his Extra-cardiac Fontan surgery. Before we were discharged from UNC Children's Hospital, the cardiology team scheduled us a follow up appointment at the Raleigh Clinic (Wake Med's Heart Center). This is where we normally go for all our cardiology appointments (a 15 minute drive is much better than a 1 hour drive!).

Today at the checkup, we did all the usual stuff - took Ethan's vitals (good blood pressure, 96% pulse ox), weighed him (17.0 kg/37.5lbs), measured his height (41.5in/105.41cm), Dr. R listened to Ethan's heart with the stethoscope, had an echo (ultrasound of the heart), and also added an EKG. Everything looked great according to their standards! Dr. R decided to start weaning the main diuretic (Furosemide/Lasix) to once a day instead of twice a day, still 2.5mL dosage. We're able to completely drop the other diuretic (Spironolactone/Aldactone)! In one week, we'll be able to stop the Lasix all together so Ethan will then be back to no meds!!!! This is fabulous news - especially considering the fact that pre-surgery, we were told by the surgeon to expect to be on baby aspirin indefinitely. Also, in the PICU, Dr. R said we'd probably start Enalapril (an ACE inhibitor to treat high blood pressure) indefinitely but apparently that's not needed any more either!!!!

We also got great news to find out that we don't go back for a cardiology checkup for an entire year! What a relief to know that Dr. R thinks he's in good enough shape to go that long between visits! We're used to seeing him every 3-6 months. 

Praise the Lord for taking care of our sweet boy and helping his recovery go so smoothly! Now it's time to get back to our new normal life, just in time to await the arrival of Ethan's little brother, due in only 5 weeks. Poor baby brother still has no name but we're working on it :)

In the meantime, Ethan's enjoying running around without getting out of breath and tiring out easily. This poor momma is the one trying to keep up with him these days! Our next family goal between now and Nov. 2 is to work on getting Ethan potty-trained. He did a great job on Tuesday, wearing underwear all day long and taking himself to the potty each time he needs to go. He was a little late and had an accident each time but at least he realized what was happening and could stop himself and finish in the bathroom! Baby steps! Maybe this Lasix is paying off after all!

One Week!

It's been one week (and one day) since we left UNC Hospital. The week was spent at home, resting and just taking it easy. I didn't realize just how tired we all were from spending 11 days there.

Ethan has slept 12-14 hours minimum every night (he usually sleeps about 10 hours). That's allowed Dan & I some extra sleep as well.

My pelvic pain is nearly gone, which has helped my sleep as well, so at this time I've decided to hold off on seeking chiropractic help. I had my 33 week checkup on Friday & all is still looking great with this baby & pregnancy! Hard to believe our due date is only a little over 6 weeks away! We still have to decide on a name, but otherwise we'really ready to meet baby boy Miles!

Also last week, I took Ethan to the pediatrician for his post-op checkup & also suture removal from his 3 chest tubes. He was scared it would hurt & kept crying, "No, no, don't do it. It's going to hurt!" His doc assured him it would not hurt unless he wiggled so I held his hand & he closed his mouth & screamed & before he knew it, all 3 sutures were out - painlessly! The doctor promised a sticker if Ethan was good but since Ethan doesn't like stickers, he asked for a lollipop. The doc was out of lollipops but told Ethan I'd probably go buy him one (or some other kind of treat) for a reward. So, we ended up buying an ice cream sandwich at the gas station.

That was really the extent of our week. Dan & I did get my parents to watch Ethan for us a couple hours on Friday night so we could get out for a long ovrdue date night at a steakhouse, which was nice. We also made it to church & small group on Sunday! It was our first real family outing & it was great! We especially were excited that Ethan did not get out of breath walking from the parking lot to the church building!

Home at Last!

We have had a great first 24hrs at home! We are so thankful for our friend, Rebecca, from our small group at church to come pick me and Ethan up at the hospital yesterday afternoon since Dan's out of town for work for a couple days.

Ethan is enjoying being back home in his own familiar surroundings. Last night, I let him take a long bath (just had to be careful to not submerge his chest in water) since he'd only had a couple sponge baths in the hospital and had not had a chance to get his hair washed in nearly 2 weeks (poor kid!). It was hard convincing him to go to bed last night because he wanted to play with every single toy for a little bit but after the bath and bedtime Bible story, he fell right asleep.

Ethan was able to sleep 12 straight hours and I slept 9. Another friend from our small group, Kyla, came over this morning to watch Ethan for a couple hours while I went grocery shopping. We have another friend from church coming to bring us some dinner tonight! 

Ethan's much more active now that he's home, but still has some trouble bending over and also sitting/standing on his own. He also has been walking hunched over for the past couple of days. He doesn't say he's in any pain so his nurses think he's just being protective of his chest and will straighten back up over time.

We have a post-op visit with our pediatrician this Wednesday. They'll assess how he's doing and also remove the sutures from his 3 chest tubes. Then we'll have a follow-up visit with his cardiologist at the Raleigh Clinic at Wake Med at the end of this month. The only meds we came home on are Lasix and Aldactone. Both are diuretics that we will eventually be weaned off of, which is good because Ethan puts a pretty big fuss about taking them and we have to take them twice a day.

Thanks, again, for everyone who has followed our blog and prayed for us. Now that we're home, we'll still keep the blog going but will not update quite as often. Hopefully, our updates will be more  about life and less about medical stuff for a while. We look forward to slowly getting back into a routine with fall just around the corner. We are supposed to stay home/away from large crowds & obviously ill people for at least another week, then we can start going back to church, Community Bible Study, & more. We look forward to seeing all our friends again! Ethan still will need to take it easy once we resume those activities - no rough play, no playgrounds, no sports, no tricycle riding, etc. for another 6 weeks while his sternum heals completely (just in time for the new baby to arrive!), but otherwise, his nurses want him to stay active to keep the fluid build-up in his chest at bay.

One Week!

Today is August 25th, 2011. We have one week from today (September 1) before surgery so we've decided to go into hiding to stay away from germs/stay healthy before the big day next week. Daddy (Daniel) is still working full time, up until surgery but Ethan and I plan to lay low and just hang out here at the house so we can stay well. We both have a little bit of a stuffy nose this week, but I've had that my entire pregnancy so not sure if I'm getting sick or just having a little more of the pregnancy congestion now that I'm in my 3rd trimester!

Goals for the next week: stay healthy, get/keep the house cleaned up (getting harder to bend over and pick stuff up as the baby gets bigger), find someone to watch the dog, enjoy some quality family time, put together my "care pack" for Ethan for post-op recovery, take some time to explain to Ethan what will be happening to him next week, and try to not go stir-crazy in the house!

Ethan's hospital sent us a nice picture storybook for us to read to him to help us explain going to the hospital for heart surgery. It shows some cartoon pictures of a child hooked up to all kinds of equipment (IV's, foley bladder catheter, ventilator, chest tubes, pulse ox, oxygen, etc.). Fortunately, he'll still be sedated while most of that stuff is still in/on him). When he gets out of ICU and is transferred to the step-down floor, he'll definitely be rid of the big stuff like vent, IV's, chest tubes, catheter so he should probably only have the pulse ox and maybe EKG stickers.

Please be praying for us to have the right words to use when explaining all this to him and for him to not be scared and that he'll be able to understand it all. Up to now, we've only told him we're trying to stay healthy for next week's pre-op appointment (on Wed., August 31) where they'll take special pictures of his chest bones (X-Ray) and that the next day we'll return and that he'll take a big nap (anesthesia) while his doctors work on fixing his heart so he doesn't get out of breath so quickly. He seems to like the idea of having more breaths so we're trying to keep it positive for him. He has no real sense of time at this age so we don't want to reveal everything at once and overwhelm him or have him worry about it for too long.

If anything else comes up between now and next Wedneday at pre-op (like having to postpone surgery due to illness, etc), we'll keep you posted. Otherwise, be on the lookout next Thursday for lots of updates about the surgery and recovery! We don't get updates during the actual surgery so don't be alarmed if it takes us a while to update post-op!

It's Been a While!

Wow, does time fly! Today's the first day of summer and I just realized I still have Valentines wallpaper up here on the blog! Guess it's time for a makeover and some big updates! Well, like they say, "No News is Good News!"

So what have we been up to for the last 4 months? Lots - but nothing involving anything medical for Ethan! He had his last cardiologist checkup back in February and doesn't return until mid-August (after his 3rd birthday!). At that time, we expect to have a little more info as to when Ethan's 3rd (and hopefully final) stage of surgery (the Fontan) should take place. At his Feb. appt, he was about 3 pounds shy of the minimum weight required to do the surgery so we've just been working on fattening the boy up as our main priority. Easy to do in the summer time with lots of cold sweets to chow down on! Ethan wakes up asking for ice cream, popsicles, candy, etc. Of course, we don't let that be his "breakfast of champions" but it does tend to make it into our mid-afternoon or evening snack time!

And speaking of surgery, we have had 5 other heart friends (most of them younger than Ethan) already make it through their 3rd stage of surgery in the last month so we've been following their journey's, praying for them, and learning what recovery looks like for them so we can start to mentally prepare for our own when our time comes. We just have to keep in mind that this particular heart defect, HLHS, is one of the most complicated ones (in case you didn't know or have forgotten, there are over 35 known heart defects currently) so each case is unique with the outcomes and how each child's body handles the surgeries & recoveries. As we're learning, heart kids live on their own timetable for recovery and nobody seems to really go "by the book" so just because one kid may struggle with a certain aspect of recovery (such as eating, keeping O2 sats up, chest tube drainage, etc), doesn't mean that it's the same for everyone (Ethan included) so we will continue to just trust God when our time comes.

Well enough about Ethan's medical stuff, time for the fun stuff! First, I have to admit I've been bad about not getting a lot of pictures with the camera lately so this post won't have a lot of pictures. Dan & I both got new phones back in January that take good pictures and I have hundreds on there, I just have to figure out how to get some on this site. I've uploaded lots straight to Facebook but am still learning how to get them to other places!

This spring, Ethan and I wrapped up our first year of Community Bible Study! I had a great time getting to know ladies of all ages from different churches across the city. We spent the year studying the book of Luke. Ethan's class had a great time doing their own lessons throughout the New Testament. He learned 6 different Bible verses set to music, along with lots of other Bible songs. He had a great time at his year-end concert getting to perform these songs on stage with all the other kids. He goes around the house singing these songs every day & I've come to learn most of them as well!

Ethan continues to continually amaze us with his non-stop energy, creativity, extravertedness (if that's even a word!), & his love for God & his family. He loves to lead family prayer time at meals, bedtime, the car, & more. He still naps most afternoons for a couple of hours but gets up early (about 7:30am) and goes strong all day long until 8:30 or 9pm. He loves to draw (especially footballs) - he colored all over his walls with his (not-so) washable Crayola crayons, he draws in the tub with his tub crayons, outside with chalk & on paper as a last resort is seems! He also is proving to be a smart kid - he can count to 15, knows his colors, numbers, letters, and always barters for more of anything (like I'll say he has 5 more minutes to play & he'll ask for 6 minutes or I'll say he can have 1 book read to him before bed & he'll ask for 2).

He still doesn't know a stranger. One night when we were out to eat, an older gentleman passing by our table waved to him and held out his arms & Ethan reached out his arms trying to go to him! He also talks to any & every thing he sees - greets everyone in stores, says "bye" to all the trees we pass as we drive down the road, even carries on full conversations with the geese we feed at the lake.

Ethan also has grown a lot spiritually this year through his attendance at Community Bible Study, MOPS, Sunday school & of course by following our example at home. He is sensitive to the needs of others - especially his family, extended family & our heart friends. He often initiates prayer when I don't even think to stop and pray at times. We let him help decide which heart friends & which family to pray for at meals & before bed time and he even will stop me in the middle of the day randomly and just tell me we need to pray for someone (or something). I look forward to seeing him grow closer to God & especially look forward to the day he decides on his own to accept Christ as his own personal savior because he wants to & not because we tell/ask him to do so!

Well in other big news, I'm tackling what I've been dreading as much if not more than Ethan's upcoming 3rd surgery - I'm starting on potty training Ethan! I know this sounds like I'm being overly dramatic & exaggerating but I'm not! I really have been nervous about the whole process. Fortunately, Ethan's been really excited about it. He received big boy underwear for Christmas & keeps asking when he can wear them. As of late last week, we have started the transition to pull-up diapers & Ethan has loved it! He has gone potty a handful of times each day for the last 4 days but still soaks his pull-ups. I've found his reward of choice/best motivational tool for him is a few M&M's ("nuh-nems" as he calls them) for each time he successfully pees in the potty. We also have an Elmo ptty chart w/ stickers that we started using today as well. So pray for us as we start this new journey towards no more diapers!

I'm sure I've left out lots of small things to update that have happened over the last four months so I'll just end with a list of Ethan's favorites (in no particular order):

Foods: red seedless grapes, watermelon, cheese, yogurt, cheeseburgers (w/ ketchup & mustard), lettuce (plain), ice cream cones (with any kind of ice cream as long as it has chocolate &/or sprinkles), Rita's Italian Ice (with sprinkles), M&M's, cheese quesadillas ("dillas"), tea, Krispy Kreme doughnuts (especially the ones with sprinkles), popcorn....the list goes on and on (except for most meats)

Toys/Games: anything with tires (I forgot to mention I had to get 4 new tires on my minivan about a month ago and E still hasn't stopped talking about it to everyone he sees) - I just got one of those fishing games for him where the "fish" are actually tires from the movie Cars, his train set, CandyLand, anything related to cooking (he doesn't use his tool workbench much for building, but rather for cooking up his nuts/bolts as "meals"), he likes using his shopping cart to go shopping "at Target" & he tries to swipe every purchase across my laptop to "pay for it" at a cost of "2 bucks" for each item - no matter what it is/how much it really costs

TV/Movies/Characters: Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Toy Story (especially Buzz Lightyear), Handy Manny, The Count ("Ha Ha"), Elmo & Big Bird from Sesame Street (still his most popular category of movies to watch - especially Follow That Bird), Veggie Tales, & Richard Scary's Busytown show.

2 Years Old!

Where and how do I even begin to put in to words all I'm thinking and feeling today?!?Wow, I can hardly believe that two years ago today we met our sweet little heart baby for the very first time! What a blessing these two years have been for our family and also truly what an answer to prayer this has been for us to even be able to have a child at all after having miscarried a year earlier (and ironically enough who's birthday would have been later this month). This is going to be a long post but I promise there will be pictures!

We are very thankful for such a great team of prayer warriors we had during my pregnancy and delivery of Ethan. And, needless to say, we are also very thankful for the wonderful medical team that helped take care of him those first hours and days as we awaited his first open heart surgery at just 2 days old. Not to mention, the surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and more that cared for him before, during and after surgery and also our cardiologist that continues to check up on him every couple of months. We have overcome quite a bit these last two years, including a second heart surgery and the not so easy task of staying fairly healthy during RSV/cold/flu seasons. We continue to praise God daily for the gift of our little miracle - Ethan Scott Miles!

Since my last update (June VBS & Tatoo), there's been a lot happening. Ethan tagged along with me in July as I helped out with our church's July VBS (no tatoos this time!). He has become better at walking and talking since the first VBS and he just absolutely loves church - it's like a second (or maybe third if you count all the time he spent at UNC Hospital) home to him! LOL Each morning of VBS, I'd wake him up and tell him it was time for church and VBS and he'd rejoice and say, "Yay! Turt (church)!" By the time we'd walk up the sidewalk and into the building, he'd already be saying, "Bye!" like I couldn't get him to his classroom soon enough and leave him to play with his buddies!

Then one week ago (last Tuesday, 8/4) I took him in to UNC's Raleigh Clinic at Wake Med to see his cardiologist, Dr. R. We had not been there since January and I remember what a hard time we had in keeping him still for the echo so I brought nearly everything but the kitchen sink along in hopes of keeping him distracted long enough to do the echo. That last visit he was just not cooperative and didn't want to sit still long enough to get all the pics they needed so they sent us (back in March) to UNC's Cath Lab to have a sedated echo done. We never got any definite answers from that other than it looked "fine" and there really wasn't anything more to discuss. So, I was determined to "make" Ethan cooperate this time so we didn't have to go back to UNC again if this attempted echo failed.

At last week's cardio appointment, I'm pleased to say that Ethan weighed in at 12.6 kilos (27.7 lbs) and 34". His blood pressure was good (don't remember exact number) and his pulse ox was the best I'd seen yet - 87%! When Dr. R came in to talk to us, he said that he reviewed the March sedated echo and it looked so good that they didn't even need to do one that day and we can just wait 6 more months to come back for another visit! This was obviously an encouraging visit for us!

We know that given Ethan's particular heart defect, he does still have one more heart surgery to go but we know it won't even be something we have to even think about until after the next visit in February. Ever since we first heard of Ethan's condition and started learning about treatment options, we had always been told the 3rd surgery would most likely take place between 2-5 years old. This is such a wide age range for us - especially since he had his first two surgeries within the first 6 months of life!

Well speaking of Ethan's birthday, we celebrated with all our family (16 adults and kids) here at our house on Sunday evening. The menu was all of Ethan's favorite foods - "peesha"(pizza), cheese doodles, popcorn, M&M's, Kool-Aid juice pouches (thanks VBS church staff for that one!), salad (for the adults) and confetti cupcakes with Elmo candies and sprinkles! Yes, Ethan's still obsessed with Elmo so we did the same party theme again this year!

Ethan had a lot of fun eating all his favorite foods (did I mention this kid likes to eat?!) and opening all his presents. Some of his favorite gifts included a T-ball set from his Aunt Jenny, a collapsable tunnel from his Aunt Jessica (aka "Ca-Ca") and Uncle Brandon (aka "Bo-Bo"), a bubble blower (thanks Aunt Amanda, Uncle Reggie, cousins Rebecca & Marissa), and some new Elmo DVD's and Elmo puppet book (thanks Mimi and Pop-Pop). He also received some nice new clothes (thanks Uncle Chris - aka "Kiss" & great-grandma Jada), a shopping cart (thanks Grammie & Pap-Pap), coloring books and puzzles. It's been non-stop fun around here since Sunday night! Now if I can just figure out where to store all the new stuff!

Ear Infection

When will this bout of illnesses leave our family? Fortunately, Dan and I are healthy for the time being. But poor Ethan, he (and I) barely got any sleep late Friday night/early Saturday morning. The poor kid cried his eyes out until 4am, when I think he finally passed out from sheer exhaustion. The only time he would calm down is when I'd pick him up from his crib and hold him and rock him in the glider. I could tell he wasn't feeling well but couldn't pinpoint what was wrong - no fever, no runny nose, no symptoms of any kind as far as I could tell. Saturday morning, Ethan woke up at 8:30 and did develop a 2 degree fever and was still fussy (who blames him with only 4 hours sleep!). So while I got to sleep in a bit and get ready for the day, I urged Dan to call the urgent care office of our pediatrician to figure out what was wrong. Dan managed to get Ethan a 10am appt. and graciously took Ethan to it so I could have some time off.

What did I do with that time off? Last year for Mother's Day/my birthday (same weekend), Dan gave me a spa certificate and here it is, a week from my birthday (aka - the expiration date on the certificate!) and I had yet to redeem it. So Friday morning, I called and booked myself a 1 hour Swedish massage appointment that I couldn't cancel. So I took full advantage of my morning off to pamper myself (funny that Pampering Ourselves was the topic at MOPS last week!). And while I had a nice, leisurely morning/afternoon, my boys anxiously waited at the peds for 30+ minutes past their appt. time before being taken to an exam room for their appt.

Turns out that our poor little man has a double ear infection. Nothing that more Amoxicillin can't cure, huh? So, we took it easy the rest of the weekend to catch up on rest and let the little guy try to get better. We're keeping him comfortable with children's ibuprofen and treating the infection with a more expensive form of Amoxicillin than what we were prescribed 2 weeks ago for the "possible" strep.

January recap

What a busy month this has been! Not to bore you with too many details (as I am often known for!), I'll make this post fairly quick. The big highlights for this month included a baby shower for Aunt Jessica (due in March), nearly 4 inches of SNOW on Jan. 20th, shopping at the Kids Exchange (huge bi-annual consignment sale), a cardiology checkup, and one of Ethan's church buddies 1st birthday party (tomorrow).

The baby shower for my sister, Jessica, was a lot of fun. It was a lot of work to plan, but totally worth every minute of it! My mom (Mimi) hosted the big event and my other sister, Jenny, helped with food and decorations. Thanks Ethan for bearing with me on all the shopping trips to Target, the dollar store, and beyond as I gathered all my supplies for it. Thank you also, Dan, for watching Ethan so I could have all afternoon at Mom's house to decorate, set up, throw the shower then clean up without having Li'l E clinging to me!

Snow day was also a lot of fun - Ethan's first real measurable snow! He didn't like me bundling him up at first, but then when we got outside, he didn't mind at all! We babysat Ethan's cousins half the day so their parents could work and we had a blast playing in the snow, having snowball fights, making snow angels and playing with our new neighbors. I know we've been bad about not posting many new pictures lately, we'll hopefully get some snow pictures up soon (we did manage to get them up on Dan's facebook account at least).

The Kids Exchange is always a highlight of the new year for me. I have yet to actually sell anything because I don't know if we'll need it in the future if we ever have any more kids. I just enjoy going for all the great bargains on anything and everything for kids. This year, I managed to snag a few Elmo and Veggie Tale DVD's, an old U2 CD for Dan, and lots of spring/summer clothes for Ethan. We went on a weekday while Dan was at work and Ethan did amazingly well during our hour and a half of shopping and another hour standing in line to check out!

Ethan's cardiology checkup yesterday went pretty well. At 17 months old, he doesn't like to stay still very long and he's becoming increasingly aware of his surroundings and started crying/trembling the second I put him on the exam table to undress him to get weighed (even without the nurse or doctor in the room). He weighed in at 24 lb. 14 oz. and his blood pressure seemed fine according to the nurse. The echo went about as rough as last time (Sept.) - Ethan just cried and kept pushing the tech's hand away. I had been dreading this part because I know they need to get some good pictures of his heart so I came prepared as best as I could with everything from toys to snacks to chocolate - nothing seemed to work. The tech did manage to get a few good pictures but not as many as our doc wanted so a sedated echo at UNC has been ordered for sometime in the next month or two (the good news is that they aren't rushed or didn't see anything of concern on what few pictures they did get). So we're now just in a waiting game - we're told it could take up to two weeks just to get the call about the appointment.

And last but not least, since Ethan's friend's birthday party isn't until tomorrow, nothing to really report about that yet. I'll just say that it's a girl's party since he doesn't have any boy playmates at this time!

Fun Weekend Planned and Ethan Update

This coming weekend, Dan, Ethan and I are planning a trip down to Columbia, SC to visit my sister (Ethan's Aunt Jenny), as well as a few other friends - including one of our heart friends that we only know through their blog. If you have been following us and our heart friends then you may have guessed it already! That's right, we're planning to meet Angel Annabelle's family - Scott, Rebecca and Wyatt! We know it will be a busy weekend but it will be a great time to get away. We haven't traveled anywhere as a family since May when we went to Myrtle Beach with my family, so we're really looking forward to getting away! Please pray for safe travel for us as we leave early Friday and return Sunday night.

And I guess since this blog was originally created to update you on Ethan's health and life, I guess I should mention that he continues to do extremely well. We don't see the cardiologist again until the end of January so life has just been pretty normal for us lately. Ethan's got 4 more teeth that he's cutting so that's been our biggest challenge lately. He is still not walking independently yet but is very close. He has given up his bottle, just using sippy cups, and has almost given up his paci too - we just use it at night now. It's hard to believe our little guy is growing up so fast - he'll be 15 months old in a few weeks (Nov. 11).

Ethan also loves electronics - remotes, phones, laptops, etc. He drives us crazy "typing" on the laptop and teaches us short cuts we never knew about. He has recently learned that my cell phone does not have a number lock so he's started using the speed dial to call various family members. So for all family reading this - now you know why you may have received calls lately from me with nobody talking on our end or hanging up quickly after the call's been made. He even managed to text a message to his Aunt Amanda, saying "Please call." I don't know how that happened - I don't do the texting thing. She called us back to make sure we were OK and we both laughed about the incident! What a smart kid - just like his Daddy!

Ok, well speaking of this kid and electronics - I better run because he keeps trying to take over the laptop as I type - pulling the screen back so I can't see what I'm typing!

First Haircut!

Ok, so we've put off the inevitable long enough! Last Saturday (10/4/08) Ethan had his first haircut. No more cute curls :-( and (hopefully) no more strangers calling him such a "beautiful girl" for now! Ethan's Mimi (Julie's mom) has a wonderful hairstylist that she uses named Rachel and she's known and been praying for Ethan all along - Rachel even has one of our blue "Pray for Ethan" wristbands that we distributed during my pregnancy last year. Dan will probably be the official hair cutter for Ethan most of the time, but we wanted to give Rachel the honors of being the first one to cut it and give it some style so that Dan will just have to trim it. Busy Boy

And they say boys are easier to raise than girls... I'm still willing to debate that one right now! Ethan's quite a little busy body - not quite wanting to crawl (although he likes to sleep on his knees and can easily support himself and rock back and forth while on them) so he "slithers" along on his belly, pulling himself with his elbows and helping himself move along with the force of his right knee. He's getting to be quite speedy and certainly keeps us on our toes all the time!

He's also got quite the eyesight - picking up every single speck of dirt/crumb/hair/etc. off the carpet and putting it in his mouth! Most recent findings in his mouth include silk plant leaves, carpet & dog toy fuzz, dry dog food, half-popped popcorn kernels and a few tiny pebbles. The funniest is watching the pink drool drip down his chin from the red pieces of dog food. Fortunately Dan & I are getting quick at reading his cues and have been able to remove nearly all items before swallowing (have only missed a few tiny pieces of lint I think!).

Oh, Ethan's also (in the last week or so) been able to go from lying down to sitting up all on his own! Several times we've come in to his nursery to get him up from naps and have found him sitting up in his bed and he's also doing it consistently on the living room floor!

As for his heart, all seems to continue to be going well. We'll know for sure though when we go back to the cardiologist for a checkup next Thursday, 6/26, so please keep that visit in your prayers. He is even doing well with increasing the amount of non-thickened bottle feedings to where we haven't been thickening them for a couple of weeks now!

more firsts

Wow, this has been a busy month for us. Sorry for the long delay in updating. This month, Ethan had lots of "firsts"! We hope to have some new pictures soon too.

Here's a quick rundown of all Ethan's "firsts" for this month:

- May 10th: we went Strawberry Pickin' (for my birthday - a family tradition for me growing up)
- Also on May 10th: Ethan had his first late night of staying out past "curfew" (aka bedtime) with his cousins and aunts & uncles while Dan took me to a nice birthday dinner!
- May 11th: first Mother's Day (he even colored a card for me with Daddy's help) and he turned 9 months old!
- May 17th: first time in the church nursery while Dan & I helped lead a budget conference (he was very good, didn't cry at all and kept the workers entertained with his babbling & overall cuteness!)
- Also May 17th: Ethan & I went to our first heart reunion at UNC Hospital' Farm for all the pediatric cardiology patients (it was a fun cookout with games for the older kids and a chance to see alot of our nurses and of course the surgeons who have helped fix Ethan's heart)
- May 18-21: Ethan's first vacation (we went with my parents to North Myrtle Beach)
- May 19: first visit to a beach - he enjoyed playing with the sand and watching the waves but the water was a little too chilly for swimming
- May 20: first time in a swimming pool, again it was a little chilly but his Aunt Jenny had a fun time teaching him to kick and float with her help (she's a former infant/toddler swim instructor for the YMCA)
- May 26: first Memorial Day cookout

Ethan also went to the pediatrician last week for his 9 month well baby checkup. He weighed in at 19lb. 13 3/4oz., putting him about the 35% mark. He also measured 29 in., putting him about 70%. He continues to be a busy baby, exploring everything he gets a hold of. He's doing great with rolling all over the floor and has started making diaper changes a challenge by wanting to flip over onto his tummy. He seems on the verge of crawling but he may skip that phase altogether, we'll just have to wait and see. We continue to thank God daily for each day we have with him and for how well he's doing physically with his heart, developmental progress, and hearty appetite. Until we hear if we'll ever be able to do another swallow study, we continue to help him "practice" his unthickened bottles 2x/day and do the rest still thickened with the rice cereal. He enjoys eating Cheerios, Gerber Puffs and all his baby foods. Ethan has also started saying "Ma Ma" randomly!

P.S. We are looking forward to an exciting event on Wednesday. We are going back to UNC to be on a parent panel for their annual cardiology conference. This year it's all about Single Ventricle heart defects like Ethan's! We are one of only 4 families selected to answer questions from all the nurses attending this conference. We pray that we can be of assistance by participating and that we glorify God through our responses.

first weekend away from my baby

So in case I didn't mention it already, Dan had his first time away from Ethan 2 weeks ago. He was out of town all week for work. Now it's my turn. Over this past weekend (Friday and Saturday), I went on a trip with my mom and two sisters to Indianapolis for our cousin's wedding. We were only gone about 36 hours but it was still hard being away from my boys (Dan & Ethan)! Dan's mom came over for the weekend to help him out and they all seemed to have a fun time together.

Our whirlwind trip was fun and definitely a memory-maker. It was filled with late nights and action-packed days. It was great getting to see all of my mom's side of the family again (we all met up a few days before Christmas in Knoxville, TN except the bride-to-be) Besides the fun of the wedding, I also really enjoyed the plane ride. It's been nearly 6 years since I've had a reason to fly anywhere (last time was our honeymoon) and I love being up in the sky and looking out at the world below.

We will try to get some more pictures of Ethan up soon. His 2nd tooth has come through and we think more are on the way because he's been fussy today and still gnawing down on everything in sight (he especially likes my hair today for some reason). We'll try to see if we can get a good picture showing off his teeth but that's a rare sight. Usually if he's got his mouth open wide enough to see them, he inevitably sticks his tongue out!

Our suspicions were correct, Ethan cut his first tooth on Saturday! I thought I saw it starting to break through but once he grabbed a hold of my finger and jammed it in his mouth and bit down, I felt it and knew for sure! We keep trying to get a good look at it but everytime we try to open his mouth, he sticks out his tongue so we have a hard time seeing it.

In other news, Dan's out of town for work all week. This is his first time to be away since Ethan was born. Fortunately, his company only makes him do overnight travel once a year (for this conference) so this will not be a common occurence. I'm having lots of fun getting Ethan all to my self this week, yet, at the same time trying not to kill our dog (a mini dachsund) since she doesn't have Dan around to play with her at night!

I'm doing my best to stay busy and get out of the house some this week while Dan's gone before I go stir-crazy! Tomorrow, we go over to UNC Hospital to visit one of our heart buddies - Shelby. She's the little girl that we saw a couple of weeks ago for her first birthday party. You can keep her in your prayers as she is over there to get her tear ducts unblocked (eye surgery). I'll give an update when I have one.

God has been so good to us through all your prayers and has kept Ethan as healthy (heart and otherwise) as possible and we continue to praise God daily for his goodness to us. 8 months old!

Ethan turned 8 months old today! We are so thankful that God has given us so much time with our little guy and do our best to not take a single day for granted, since we have no idea how many days or years he may be with us. Thank you to everyone, as always, for checking on us, praying for us, and encouraging us through our journey thus far!

A few new things to update with Ethan's development. He is getting better at sitting up on his own and he's started rolling over from back to stomach much more this week. For the past 2 days, every time I go to get him out of his crib (in the morning and during both his daytime naps) I find him on his tummy and fussing because he hasn't quite mastered how to roll back over yet! We also think he is teething since he chews on EVERYTHING and has been a lot fussier than normal this week. Oh, and one more new accomplishment - Ethan managed to pull his jeans off today while he was lying on the floor!

Well that's all for tonight, it's bedtime!

I nearly forgot about the appointment until about 30 minutes beforehand, but we did make it to the peds for Ethan's last RSV shot of the season! We won't have to do this again until October or November so that will be a nice break! Ethan's weight is looking good, he weighed in at 18lb. 11 1/4 oz. (8.5 kg) today so I'm pleased!

As always, thanks for checking in on us. Things are going so well that we haven't had too much to report lately. We praise God for Ethan's continued good health and continue to pray for comfort and strength for baby Annabelle's family as they grieve her loss. We also ask for prayer for baby Julianne as she goes for her swallow study tomorrow. She's been on a feeding tube her entire life and if she doesn't pass, then the doctors are talking about surgically placing a G-tube button on her stomach for feeding so she doesn't have to have a tube down her nose any more. Please pray God's will to be accomplished for her tomorrow. I know her parents desperately want her to pass but, more importantly, are trusting God for whatever the outcome!

Sorry for the delay in any posting lately. Things have been going great and we haven't had any doctors appointments lately so not really anything to update. Ethan continues to do well sleeping at night - sleeping on average, 12-13 hours a night, plus several long naps throughout the day.

We are continuing to work on getting him used to non-thickened bottles by doing one bottle of regular formula when he is most alert (usually first thing in the morning or after a long nap). He is also enjoying trying new baby foods like pears, carrots, and even chicken (all pureed thanks to Gerber!).

Ethan's still not sitting up on his own, but we're almost there. He can finally roll over and has started doing it nearly every time he's on his changing table so we have to keep a close eye on him!

We had our first little "accident" with him last Wednesday. We decided to go for a family walk after dinner but somehow forgot to buckle him in the stroller. Next thing I knew, the stroller felt a little lighter and I looked down, and there was our son - face down on the road! What a scary sight for all, but fortunately Ethan came away without a scratch! After a brief moment of cuddling with mommy, Ethan calmed right down from his screaming and we put him back in the stroller and continued on with our walk. We've put Ethan in his stroller several times since then and he hasn't seemed to be traumatized by the even, so that's good!

7 months old!

"They grow up so fast" is the phrase everyone says about kids, and boy is it true! I was even told this phrase yesterday as I was leaving the pediatrician office by a lady leaving the same time as me (no kids with her), she opened the office door for me as I carried Ethan out to the car. It's hard to believe that Ethan is officially 7 months old today! So much has happened, yet it still seems like just yesterday that I first held him in my arms.

Today also makes 7 weeks since Ethan's 2nd heart surgery - the Glenn. One more week and we can pick him up under the arms (not like I'm counting down or anything!). After visiting the pediatrician and hearing Ethan now weighs over 18 pounds, no wonder why I feel like I'm getting a workout by holding him and picking him up so much every day! We still have our home scale that we used to use for weekly weigh-ins but since we don't have to do it anymore, we have boxed it up and it's not worth getting back out so I was curious to see how much weight he'd gained since his 6 month checkup.

By the way, speaking of picking Ethan up so much, Dan hurt his arm/elbow about a week and a half ago from falling off his road bike and hasn't been able to pick him up very much. Dan doesn't think his arm is broken so he hasn't gone to the doctor yet, and it started feeling better towards the end of last week, but now it's hurting pretty bad again so he hopes to see the doctor about it today. You can keep him in your prayers that his arm gets better soon so he can have full use of it again (and get to hold Ethan more - he misses that!)
